Oh me, oh my, doesn’t it feel good to be back, Saints fans?? Four weeks of preseason in the books, most fantasy teams have drafted, I’m in love with a photo, and the regular season is upon us. Breathe it all in. Seriously. Take a moment. Right now this team has its new car smell.
Now a lot of these men are no brainers on this 2019 squad: Your Breeses, Jordans, Thomases, Kamaras, your $9 million backup QBs, etc. But who is backing them up? What kind of depth do we have? Any surprise starters? Any unfortuante tough cuts? Well there are definitely some tough cuts again this year, but like last year, this is a good problem to have.
Practice squad hopeful projections are listed at the bottom. You have to remember, when these young guys get cut to the waiver wire, it’s a shark feeding frenzy. So it’s hard to say who exactly will make the practice squad. I just made a list of anyone the Saints would like to have back, but ultimately will cut. On that somber note, let’s dive in the pool, Who Dats. The water is perfect!
PROJECTED DEPTH CHART:
The quarterbacks here are no secret. I can go so far as to say that Drew Brees will be an MVP candidate again this year, while Taysom Hill will be involved in 8 or more touchdowns.
I’m going unprecedented here, but the Saints are going to hold on to 4 running backs come Saturday. Ozigbo can’t beat out Washington because of his special teams play, but the Saints can’t afford to risk him to the waiver wire either. Devine has been impressive enough that Sean will want to retain him somehow.
Was his job EVER in question?!?!?? One of the best in the game.
TED GINN, JR
Deonte Harris has earned his spot. The Saints traditionally carry 6 receivers on the squad, but I belive that this year will be different because of Harris. Humphrey is another cat that I can’t see Sean risking out on the open waiver wire. Butler, Harris, or Humphrey would be poached in a heartbeat if we let them out into the wild.
The Garrett Griffin injury made this easy. He is a true tight end that can block, and it’s unfortunate that he got injuries. But with those injuries to a few guys like Griffin and Mack, we now get Dan Arnold doing well, which leads to an easy choice. A.J. Derby was an interesting late edition to the team, but he hasn’t out performed Arnold.
A lot of guard/centers here, and not a lot of tackles. I’m hesitant to put Newhouse on this list, but they’re desparate for backup tackles. Don’t be surprised if they go out and scour the waiver wire for some FA tackles.
MARIO EDWARDS, JR
This group will see some interesting do-si-do action in the first quarter of the season due to Rankins coming off of his injury and Onyemata’s one game suspension. This position group could end up looking fairly different by the end of the season.
Sometimes Sean goes as light as 4 linebackers into a game, and I’m doing that here because I think Biegel will clear waivers and even start some games as needed, and Porter Gustin and Colton Jumper are practice squad candidates.
Ok, so y’all are gonna hate me, but Ken Crawley has outplayed P Rob this offseason, and I think he’s gonna survive the cuts. He even started playing special teams to help his chances. Yeesh.
We are deep at safety, Who Dats. There’s a lot of potential for the secondary this year, and I’m hopeful for an increase in turnovers from last season.
I mean, no shit, right!?!?!
PRACTICE SQUAD CANDIDATES:
VINCE BIEGEL (could also be active during season)
CYRIL GRAYSON, JR
CARL GRANDERSON (yep I said it)
I think 3 of these guys will be poached. If I had to guess, Hampton, Grayson, and Mack. But we will also have some good additions for the future as well!
I’m really hopeful for Ozigbo and Humphrey to make the team, and I’d really like to see Porter Gustin and Cyril Grayson stick around. They have a lot of enticing potential. But no matter who makes the team, as long as we see this:
We’ll be just fine, Who Dat Nation. Get your alcohol and heart pills ready, the regular season is here!!
